WOODS CROSS С The Joy Foundation may find temporary shelter this coming January, but $20,000 worth of their equipment will be homeless.
The independent non-profit foundation, currently located in the basement of the same building as the Bountiful/Davis Art Center, will lose its space when the building is razed to make room for a new Bountiful City Hall early next year. Though the group may find refuge in the old county courthouse with BDAC, the $20,000 worth of theater and sound equipment installed in their current home won’t be able to travel with them.
“We can’t move it all and install it wherever we end up temporarily,” said Jane Joy, head of the foundation. “Right now, we don’t even have any place to store it.”
The foundation, which sponsors the chalk art festival in Bountiful every spring, was designed to give disadvantaged youth the chance to experience the arts. As part of this, the group holds a weekly open mic night and has studio space available for local youth. The equipment for both programs includes everything from stage lighting and flooring to soundproofing for a room, all paid for by funds from the Michael Jordan Foundation.
“That grant money is gone,” said Joy. “We’ve contacted them, but we’re not in their usual focus area.”
The non-profit has no official ties to Bountiful, but the city allows them to use the basement space at the art center free of charge. Bountiful City Manager Russell Mahan said that any moving plans for either the Bountiful/Davis Art Center or the Joy Foundation are in their early stages, and that nothing has been formalized. There have been talks with the county about BDAC moving into the space, but the Joy Foundation hasn’t been included in the discussion.
