KAYSVILLE - The new general of the Utah National Guard Army and Air Force is a Kaysville man with a military service tradition in his genes.
“My dad was a native Utahn, in the active duty Air Force,” said Kenneth Gammon, who recently was promoted to the top position with the Utah National Guard.
His father, the late Harold Gammon, retired from service at Hill AFB, and his mother, Ann, still lives in Kaysville.
“The first few years of my life I was an Air Force brat,” Gammon said. He graduated from Layton High School and completed a bachelor of science degree in electronic engineering technology from Weber State University.
That was four years after marrying Simone, a native of Rio de Janeiro who he met at WSU. They are parents of a twin boy and girl who will be seniors at Davis High School.
Gammon’s degree from Weber was earned some years after he enlisted in the Utah Air National Guard in 1984 and served in the 299th Range Control Squadron as an air traffic controller assigned to Hill AFB.
“I was having trouble putting myself through school, was paying my own way,” he said, explaining his initial decision to sign up with the Guard.
“I really enjoyed that,” he said of air traffic control. “We actually did the radar control, didn’t work out of the tower.”
