SUNSET — A 44-year-old woman who was apparently attempting suicide by laying down on FrontRunner tracks survived being hit by a southbound train Thursday morning.
The accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. near the 2300 North railroad crossing, according to Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter.
The woman apparently has ties to the north Davis area, Sunset Police Chief Ken Eborn said, but she lives in Ogden. Authorities are having trouble notifying family members.
Witnesses told police they watched the woman lay down on the tracks, but “a second before the train struck, she tried to roll out of the way,” Eborn said. “She was banged up pretty bad.”
If she had been dead-center on the tracks, she wouldn’t be alive, he said.
Eborn did not know her current condition, but confirmed she was alert when taken by Life Flight to Intermountain Medical Center.
The area the woman was in is the same general area where three people have committed suicide previously, the most recent in September of 2011.
Eborn theory is that the site has become popular because it’s rather remote, with few people nearby.
No one was on the train was hurt. Passengers were transported by bus to the Clearfield FrontRunner station.
Trains returned to a normal schedule about 11 a.m.
