KAYSVILLE - Hard work and dedication are traits shared by two students at Davis Applied Technology College who are being honored this month.
Christina Kennard and Trenton Bevard have been named students of the month for August.
Kennard, a mother of four boys, enrolled in the Information Technology program at DATC two months ago.
Though she has a civil engineering degree, she knew she would need additional skills to re-enter the workforce after 14 years away, according to information provided in a release.
Already, she has tested out of several classes and is hoping to complete the IT programming course in record time.
“I am a lifelong learner and have been consumed with lots of different things, so for me to learn about computer programming is neat for my kids, but not out of the ordinary,” she said in a release.
“I like to show them how important it is to live your entire life learning new things,” she added. “There is always a new challenge ahead of you.”
Trenton Bevard taught himself how to repair all kinds of large and small engines, but recognized he would need certifiable skills to earn a good-paying job.
A native of Eureka, he enrolled at Job Corps and entered the Motor Sports Technician program at DATC.
“I thought DATC was going to be really tough, but the teachers have shown me ways of doing things that are much easier than what I was doing and I am learning a lot of new tricks,” he said. “I had all my redneck skills, but I still needed to learn the finesse side of things and that’s made it so much easier.”
Bevard plans to take a work-based learning course through Job Corps, then take a more advanced motor sports programs until he can work in a dealership or as a shop owner.
DATC is one of eight campuses of the Utah College of Applied Technology. It offers certificate programs in business, construction, health professions, manufacturing, service professions and transportation. More information is available at datc.edu.
