But after trailing during most of the first half of play, they bounced back to outscore and outplay the Warriors to pull off one final win before playing as the first seed in the state 5A playoffs.
In the first quarter, the Darts played well offensively, while struggling to find a rhythm on defense. During the quarter, Weber player Hawken Rashid had scored six of his team’s 17 points and was also able to pull down three rebounds. Rashid’s efforts gave the Warriors a four point lead after the quarter.
The second quarter was almost a mirror image on offense, though they played slightly better defensively. The Darts, headed by James Cowser, Jordan Welk and Chris Larrabee among others, helped to close the gap slightly. Their efforts led to a two point deficit at the half.
By the time the third quarter started, the Darts had buckled down on their defense. Davis started fighting for possessions as they attempted to stave off the Warriors, who remained ahead for most of the quarter. With just over two minutes to go; however, Davis had caught up to Weber and tied the game at 34.
Just before the end of the quarter, Cowser nailed one of his two free throw attempts to give Davis their first lead since the game started.
The fourth quarter was a battle for both teams. While Davis was starting to score at will, the Warriors had a duo of their own that were taking care of the scoring for them. Dallin Adams along with Rashid started attacking the basket and getting physical with many of the Dart players. Weber had tied the game many times in the fourth, mainly due to Carson Fuller’s efforts on both ends of the floor.
However, they also got into foul trouble early. Before the fourth quarter even started, Weber was already in the penalty, making each foul difficult because Davis was able to go to the line. Of the 10 Dart attempts from the free throw line, they hit seven; none more important than two of Larrabee’s four attempts with just seconds to go. Weber had a clean shot at the basket in the closing seconds, but the shot went too far, and Davis ended up with the victory.
Davis ends the season with a 17-4 record, 13-1 in Region 1 play. Cowser had another strong performance for Davis, scoring 18 points and pulling down six rebounds. Casey Nye ended the night with nine points and four rebounds, and Welk finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists.
They’ll now have a week to prepare for the playoffs.
