WEST BOUNTIFUL — Holly Frontier crews continue to clean up areas of West Bountiful and Woods Cross after oil sprayed from a storage tank last Thursday evening.

A Holly spokesman said the accident was caused by over-pressurization that split the tank’s cover and released fuel oil.

Now, the Utah Division of Water Quality is waiting for tests results conducted on Mill Creek, and the Utah Department of Environmental Quality is examining whether Holly exceeded its daily air pollution limit.

The accident occurred about 6:45 p.m., spraying about 200 barrels of oil onto buildings, cars and roads immediately southeast of the tank, according to Holly spokesman Mike Astin. The oil release particularly impacted the mobile home park to the east of the refinery. No one was hurt.

Crews spent the night Thursday and into Friday cleaning up the oil. Astin said it is not hazardous, but it left a heavy oily residue that is slippery and messy.

South Davis Metro Fire Agency was initially called out.

“Our concern was that the oil was hazardous,” said SDMFA Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Bassett. “When we discovered it was not hazardous material, we pulled out.”

Astin said the Utah Department of Transportation and Union Pacific Railroad were notified and they cleaned up the I-15 on-ramp and railroad tracks, but Holly crews were out pressure-washing everything else, Astin said.

The oil film covered cars in area neighborhoods. Those whose cars have been covered may call the refinery care line at 801-560-5511 to receive a certificate to have their cars cleaned and detailed.

Astin said he believes the tank will be shut down for a while as investigators determine the cause of the over-pressurization.

i believe that it is unfair to say that no damage has been done. when everything is sprayed with oil things like bugs die, and if they don't the things that eat them will. and when that happens we may possibly have dead animals in the street making it unsanitary.

KUDOS to Holly Frontier!!! It seems we don't think twice to complain to a company when we are dissatisfied, so I want to take time to publicly thank everyone at Holly for the excellent -even beyond excellent- work they are doing in our community to take care of this unfortunate accident! We didn’t realize at first we had oil everywhere but my eight year old daughter kept telling me the mess outside looked like the “ants” that were reported on the news and that they smear right out on our front porch…wow was I wrong! So thanks to her we were able to communicate to Holly and get things cleaned up -- quite nicely I might add! EVERYONE has been beyond so polite and accommodating from the office, to the great guys out in the heat cleaning and dealing with every type of person imaginable, to the independent adjuster that spent quality time going over our whole home and yard to ensure every possible item is cleaned perfectly or replaced without question (and reassured us that this is not a one-time fix it but if we find anything in the future to contact them)!! Not one person has acted annoyed, rude, or grumpy, or made me feel awkward at all if we found oil spots somewhere we’d not noticed from other inspections and had to contact them to take care of it…which they generally did that day or shortly thereafter! Not only are they all beyond pleasant and professional taking care of every single thing, they do it with pride and consideration to our homes and any inconvenience this oil may have caused. I could go on and on (and on!) with my sincere appreciation for this incredible company and the hard working people that are genuinely “taking care of us”. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! …in case you missed it: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!
