However, their fourth-game comeback essentially tired them out in the fifth and final game, losing 15-11 to fall 3-2 (25-18, 16-25, 17-25, 26-24, 11-15) to the Lady Wolverines.
The Lady Vikings took the first game with the aid of several fouls and service errors committed by Hunter. Seven of Viewmont’s first 10 points came from Hunter errors as the Vikings took a 10-5 lead.
Hunter was eventually able to tie the first game at 17, however, Viewmont closed out the first game by scoring eight of the final nine points for the one-game lead.
After falling behind 2-1 following nine and eight-point losses in the next two games, the Vikings were behind early in the fourth game as the Wolverines continued to apply pressure on the Vikings. Down by as many as four points, the trio of Mckaylee Ferrell, Emily Madsen and Amanda Varley began a Vikings’ comeback that forced the match to a fifth and decisive game.
With the score at 15-18 for Hunter, Viewmont was the beneficiary of five straight Hunter errors that eventually brought the score to 21-20 for the Wolverines. A service ace from Ferrell tied the game at 21 and Jenna Sawatzki and Madsen each earned kills to take a slim lead.
With the score tied at 24, Hunter committed two errors to give the Vikings the fourth game.
The momentum didn’t carry over for the Vikings in the fifth game, however, as the team fell behind 7-2 and never fully recovered from the deficit. On one occasion Viewmont was able to bring back the deficit to three points, but the Wolverines closed out the match by winning four of the last seven points in the final game.
Ferrell finished the match with 25 assists and three service aces with one team block. Sawatzki had 11 kills with one block and Varley and Madsen combined for 10 kills in the losing effort.
The Vikings will play at West High School Thursday night at 6 p.m.
