NORTH SALT LAKE — Though there’s still more than a month of construction to go, half of Center Street is almost ready for cars again.
Officials expect that the south half of Center Street, from Highway 89 to the freeway overpass, will be open to traffic starting early next week.
They hope that the complete project, which has involved everything from putting in a cement street to moving power lines underground, will be completed in late October.
“This has been a very long project,” said North Salt Lake City Engineer Paul Ottoson.
The project initially began with the desire to re-lay the street with concrete, which is a longer-lasting and more durable road surface than asphalt.
Before that could happen, however, city officials had to contract all the utility companies who had lines running under the street. If they wanted to replace anything, the companies needed to do it during the construction window.
“You don’t want these companies coming back in six months looking to replace lines,” said Ottoson. “And the companies don’t want to drill through concrete.”
Weber Basin ended up replacing two water lines, Questar replaced a gas line, and the city replaced one of their own water lines.
City officials also decided to move the street’s power lines underground, which pushed the project’s completion date further back.
