PARK CITY — Saturday marked a historic day for Utah high school sports.
For the first time ever, 33 teams representing dozens of Utah high schools took part in the first Utah High School Cycling League race. The race showcased some of Davis County’s best and most talented bike riders, some of whom gave up other sports in order to be a part of the league.
With over 280 riders present in Park City’s Round Valley course, the race concluded with some local riders taking home high finishes in their first race.
“I’m amazed at how well we did as individuals and as a team in our first race,” said South Davis coach Dave Richards. “It was a killer race.”
Leading the charge for the South Davis Composite team Р which is comprised of student athletes from Viewmont, Woods Cross and Bountiful high schools Р was Zach Peterson, who crossed the line in first place with a four-lap time of 1:11:19 in the Varsity Boys portion of the event.
Josh Anderson finished in third place during the Junior Varsity Boys Division II race with a time of 1:00:07, and Kason Perkes six spots behind Anderson with a time of 1:03:10, less than one second behind Jordan High’s Brandon Chamberlain. Matt Reynolds, Josh Green and Jake Eiting finished in the top 50 during the JV race with times under one-and-a-half hours each.
Devry Grovum, Trent Perry and Jonah Reeder were the last of the riders to compete in the event and finished 10th, 21st and 27th in the Frosh Boys Division II race.
