BOUNTIFUL — Three years ago Davis School District started an experimental program called the advisories and small learning communities (SLC).

The ultimate goal of the advisories and SLC is to create an environment for students who have common interests to learn in smaller groups and in a chosen career pathway. The district has established pathways to help students decide what classes they should take and what would help them most.

Each school holds advisory differently. Bountiful holds advisory Monday thru Thursday for 30 minutes. Woods Cross holds advisory for 57 minutes every Thursday. Viewmont holds advisory twice a month for 35 minutes.

Each school may hold advisories differently, but the goal remains the same.

“The advisories give students a certain teacher that they can make a connection with to help with any problem they have,” said Wendy Nelson, vice principal of Woods Cross High.

“Advisories can be very beneficial for students who want to take advantage of what they have,” said Mike Moss, vice principal for Bountiful High.

The advisory program still has some minor flaws that need to be worked out, but the general feeling of administrators and faculty is that advisory is a good thing that can only be made better.

“Advisories have their good days and bad just like any normal relationship should,” said Danielle Gallegos, a Bountiful High junior.

The SLC or pathways are a similar program with different names. What the pathways were designed for is to help students find a course or subject that they want to excel in. Each school has a different way of awarding students that surpass the requirements for their chosen pathway. This also can be a learning experience for students to determine if they like their chosen future career or if they should change course now.
