Botanical center lists spring classes

KAYSVILLE — From a pruning class coming up Saturday to apple and cheese tasting in early October, there are a wide variety of classes planned at the Utah Botanical Center, 720 S. Sego Lily Lane, here.

Utah State University operates the center, and coordinates classes with the Ogden Botanical Gardens, 1750 Monroe Blvd., Ogden.

The classes are coordinated by JayDee Gunnell, Davis County USU Extension horticulture agent.

Classes are listed by date and UBC for the Kaysville campus and OBG for Ogden.

Pruning demonstrations are set for Saturday, March 7 and March 28, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at UBC, and March 28 only, 9 a.m. to noon, OBG.

A grafting demonstration is planned for Friday, April 17, noon to 1 p.m. at OBG.

An Arbor Day Celebration, Dedication and Gratification is planned for Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the UBC. It will include a dedication at 12:30 p.m. There will be free food and tours.

Totally Trees is set for Thursday, May 21 and May 28, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the UBC.

Fifteen Years of Growing Celebration is set for Friday, all day, at the OBG.

Designing Japanese Gardens for Your Landscape is planned for Friday, July 17, noon to 1 p.m. at OBG.

Fall Gardening Fun is set for Friday, Aug. 21, noon to 1 p.m. at OBG.

Seasonal Splendor will be explored Thursday, Sept. 3 and 17, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at UBC.

Designing with Bulbs will be held Friday, Sept. 18, noon to 1 p.m. at OBG.

Apple & Cheese Tasting will round out the summer season’s classes. One session will be Thursday, Oct. 1, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the UBC Farmers Market, and Friday, Oct. 9, noon to 1 p.m. at the OBG.

A variety of other activities are planned, including those termed events, landscape design short course and garden workshops.

The Landscape Design Short Course will be held Thursdays, 1 to 3 p.m., March 12, 19, 26, and April 2 at the OBG. It will follow at the UBC on Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., April 16, 23, 30, and May 7.

Garden workshops will be held Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and include:

Creating and Placing Wreaths, March 5 at OBG and March 12 at UBC.

Fill, Thrill and Spill, April 2 at OBG and April 9 at UBC.

Creating a Hanging Basket, May 7 at OBG and May 14 at UBC.

Soapmaking, July 9 at OBG and July 16 at UBC.

Drying Flowers and Making Cards, Sept. 3 at OBG and Sept. 10 at UBC.

Fresh Flower Arranging, Oct. 1 at OBG and Oct. 8 at UBC.
