OGDEN — The Davis Darts girls’ tennis team has dominated for the past three years.
It’s no surprise, then, to see that the Darts finished this season with an unblemished region record, taking home their third straight Region 1 title. The thumping included first place finishes in all five brackets.
Led by head coach Mark Borski, the Darts battled through on-and-off rain showers at Mount Ogden Park on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24 and 25.
Alexis Turley, the team’s No. 1 singles player and two-time defending region champion, took home her third straight region title by winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
Turley was a semifinalist in last year’s 5A state tournament.
Breezy Turley, younger sister to Alexis, also repeated as an individual champion by defeating Layton’s Joanna Racine 6-0, 6-0. The sophomore will again head to the state tournament as the No. 1 seed and is the defending state champion among No. 2 singles players.
As No. 3 singles winner, Jensen Emery of Davis took down Mallory McKnight 6-1, 6-1 to complete a clean sweep for the three individual brackets.
Kira Sparks and Kendall Sargent, who played first and second doubles, respectively, last year, teamed up this season to win the first doubles title with a sweep over Tiffany Taggart and Marrissa Eridkson of Syracuse, 6-0, 6-0.
Alyssa Sheehan and Liz Watkins rounded out the region championship with a victory over Sara Harward and Madson Sadler of Syracuse. The sweep wasn’t easy, but the duo walked away with 6-2, 6-4 scores.
The State 5A girls’ tennis tournament will be held Wednesday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 6, at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. The park is located at 900 South 700 East.
Brackets are available on the Utah High School Activities Association website at uhsaa.org.
