FARMINGTON — Families can get involved in Red Ribbon Week this year, supporting their schools and their children in fighting drug abuse and getting a shot at several national prizes.
Ten schools from across the United States will win $1,000 grants to be used for drug prevention and 10 families will win an iPad for their homes in this year’s campaign.
The National Family Partnership and the Drug Enforcement Administration have partnered to hold the national contest around the theme, “The best me is drug free.”
Participating families can decorate their homes with that message, take a picture that includes the decoration and the family, and upload it to redribbon.org/contest or facebook.com/RedRibbonWeek. Entries must be uploaded by parents or someone 18 or older by Nov. 2.
Voting on entries by the public will determine the winners and contestants are encouraged to involve their friends and families in casting their votes at redribbon.org/vote.
“By decorating their homes together with this year’s Red Ribbon theme, families carry the message to their communities,” said Peggy Sapp, volunteer president of the National Family Partnership, in a press release.
Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention campaign. It began in 1985 and now reaches more than 80 million people nationwide. This year’s event will run Oct. 23-31.
