WOODS CROSS — For Davis County runners, everything’s coming up gold in region championship races.
Davis High, Viewmont High, and Woods Cross High took first in their respective cross country region championships, sweeping both the boys’ and girls’ varsity races. Davis High also took individual region titles in both the boys’ and girls’ races, and Viewmont and Woods Cross girls won individual titles.
“I was excited by the way our seniors raced and inspired the rest of the team,” said Davis High coach Corbin Talley. Three of the top five Davis High girls and four of the top five Davis High boys were seniors.
Cross country team scores are taken from the point totals of the top five runners, with first place earning one point and so on. Davis girls took first in Region 1 with 21 points, almost a full 60 points ahead of nearest competitor Syracuse High. Davis boys won with 15 points, 51 points ahead of nearest competitor Weber High.
Individually, Davis High’s Ellie Child took the top spot in her region with a time of 17:37 on a 5-kilometer course. On the boys’ side, fellow Dart Alex Hedquist won the boys’ region race with a time of 15:22.
“It was definitely the fastest Region 1 cross country meet ever,” said Talley. “The top ten times were all under 19 minutes.”
In Region 2, the gap between first and second place was a little closer. Viewmont boys won first place with 49 points after a tie-breaker with second place Hunter High. Tie-breakers are decided by the sixth highest-placing runner, and the Vikings’ runner was eight spots ahead of Hunters’ runner.
Viewmont girls won with 29 points, which was 21 points ahead of nearest competitor West High
The Woods Cross High girls’ team won Region 6 with 23 points, half the total of nearest competitor Bountiful High. The Woods Cross boys’ team took first with 34 points, 12 points ahead of nearest competitor Clearfield High.
