FARMINGTON — Following months of negotiations between Lagoon and Farmington city leaders, an agreement has been reached that will allow Lagoon to display electronic signs along protected areas on I-15 and Park Lane. 

Lagoon was the primary entity requesting a change to the city ordinance that had disallowed electronic signs.

However, cchanges made to the ordinance could benefit other businesses in the area.

On Tuesday, the council stipulated that illumination will be restricted between midnight until 6 a.m.

It’s no secret that Lagoon already has an electronic sign on their property. It greets northbound I-15 drivers with blinking offers for season passes, specials and more. The council has agreed to “grandfather in” that sign, which sits at the front of Lagoons property along frontage road.

Lagoon wanted to place an additional electronic sign on the grounds of its annex building that sits along Main Street.

The council denied that request to change the zoning in that area. 

Throughout the process, city leaders have had reservations about the bright illumination put off by these types of signs, as well as the jarring nature of video feeds they believe to be distracting to drivers on I-15. 

To appease their concerns, representatives from Lagoon and the sign company brought a sample sign to the city council meeting for the members to view in the dark.

The sign has an integrated ambient light sensor that allows for the output to vary based upon the time of day and lighting conditions.
