CLEARFIELD — Sub for Santa is cutting back РК but not because the need for it has diminished.
“Last year we served 1,400 kids. This year we’re only going to take 800 kids in 214 families,” said Daneen Adams, finance and publicity director for the Family Connection Center, which oversees the annual program.
“We had to eat into our own (regular) budget, didn’t get donations,” she said. “How do you say no to kids? We had to set some parameters.”
Families can sign up at the FCC Food Bank in Layton Monday, Nov. 5, or Tuesday, Nov. 6 at FCC Headquarters in Clearfield and Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the FCC Bountiful nursery.
A second signup in Layton will be Thursday, Nov. 8. On Friday and Saturday of that week, and a waiting list will be set up for families who didn’t “make the cut” earlier.
Specific times and more details will be provided later.
“Maybe we’ll get tons of donations. Then we can help more families,” Adams said.
Contributions of no more than $20 per toy are being asked from donors for babies up to the age of 17. Families will be able to choose two gifts per child. In addition, stocking stuffers, which are already on hand, will be given out.
Knitted scarves and hats and blankets will also be given for children, hand-made by generous donors from the community, Adams said.
The drop in financial aid is also cutting into what can be provided as far as the traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas boxes, which often number about 800 for each holiday, she said.
“Customers will receive a Thanksgiving distribution on a food order until it runs out,” Adams said. “We are not doing Christmas boxes. Whatever is left from Thanksgiving we will pass out.”
The cost of providing Sub for Santa beyond donations comes to more than $37,000 when 930 children are helped, she said.
“Unless we can get a big sponsor to come in, and if we could buy all the toys then we could help everybody else (in need),” she said.
