BOUNTIFUL — Davis County residents are being sought to participate in an American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study CPS-3.
The study will be conducted in partnership with 10 host sites including Davis Hospital in Davis County, several Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County locations and McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.
Men and women between age 30 and 65 who have been diagnosed with cancer are needed for the study, which will be conducted Nov. 13-17.
The study is intended to help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer, a Cancer Society press release said.
“My mom is a two-time cancer survivor and I’m doing all I can to make sure my children don’t have to say that...I really believe this (CPS-3) is part of the answer,” one study participant said.
To enroll in the study, individuals will go to an enrollment location and be asked to read and sign an informed consent form, complete a brief survey, have their waist circumference measured and give a small blood sample.
At home, participants will complete a comprehensive survey packet that asks for information on lifestyle, behavior and other factors related to their health.
Periodic follow-up surveys will be sent to update participant information, as will annual newsletters with study updates and results.
“Many individuals diagnosed with cancer struggle to answer the question, ‘What caused my cancer?’ In many cases, we don’t know the answer,” said Alpa V. Patel, Ph.D., principal investigator of CPS-3.
“CPS-3 will help us better understand what factors cause cancer, and once we know that, we can be better equipped to prevent cancer,” he said. “Our previous cancer prevention studies have been instrumental in helping us identify some of the major factors that can affect cancer risk,” he said.
Researchers will use CPS-3 data to build on evidence from a series of American Cancer Society studies that began in the 1950s. Collectively, they have involved millions of volunteer participants.
