SALT LAKE CITY — The Davis High girls cross country team faced a tough fight to take home this year’s state championships.
The girls won the 5A title at last week’s big race, but their highest individual runner was Ellie Child at third place. The boys also had an individual runner take third, but combined point totals meant that the Davis boys took second.
“The girls had to fight a little harder for this one than we expected,” said Davis High coach Corbin Talley. “It was definitely not our easiest race of the season, but we stayed tough and finished with everything we had to earn our third straight state championship.”
The girls’ team beat the second place team, American Fork, by a relatively narrow window of 14 points. Child stayed in medal contention with a time of 18:29.0, while Emily Rich from Bingham High took home the gold with a time of 18:01.8.
“Ellie capped off an incredible first season of cross country,” said Talley. “Yesterday may not have been her best race, but she showed a lot of toughness in getting to the finish line. She has added so much speed and strength to our team.”
The boys’ team lost out on first place by 25 points, scoring 54 compared to American Fork’s 29. This is the second year the team has taken second place to American Fork in the state finals.
“The boys’ season has not necessarily gone as we would have expected,” said Talley. “We have faced more challenges on our road to the state championships than we thought we would, and we were not in the position we thought we would be in at this point.”
Alex Hedquist won third with a time of 15:21.6. Alta High’s Kramer Morton took first with a time of 15:13.2. Hedquist’s time broke the Davis High school record.
“His time would have won so many other years,” said Talley. “He stayed with the lead group, and kept himself in position even when the race got tough. It was definitely rewarding to see him.”
Also in 5A, Viewmont High girls took 11th with 314 points. The girls took 14th with 377 points.
In the 4A race, Woods Cross girls took ninth with a total of 209 points, while Bountiful girls came in at 12th with 322 points. Woods Cross boys came in eighth with 255 points. The Bountiful girls ended up in last place with 429 points.
