WOODS CROSS – Sean Barton totaled 184 yards from scrimmage, and Skyler Farnes threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats shutout the Westlake Thunder 35-0 Friday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the 4A playoffs.

Hosting a playoff game for the first time since 1998, the Wildcats didn’t disappoint their fans as the defense picked up its fourth shutout of the season as well.

In a game completely dominated by Woods Cross, the Wildcats’ first touchdown followed a short punt by the Thunder special teams, giving Woods Cross the ball on the Westlake 26 yard line. Three plays later, Junior Vailolo scored a four-yard rushing touchdown for the only score the team needed in the game.

Following a three-and-out by the defense the Wildcats went on an eight-play, 44-yard drive that culminated with Farnes finding Xequille Harry for a 29-yard touchdown pass. Woods Cross converted on a pair of third downs on the drive, including a third and short on the scoring play from Farnes to Harry.

Farnes scored his third touchdown of the game himself after scampering in from one yard away with 55 seconds left in the third quarter. The Wildcats started the scoring drive from the Westlake 40, and went four plays before Farnes’ touchdown run.

Jake Brown scored the fourth touchdown to cap off a quick three-play, 35 yard drive that started when the Wildcats defense recovered a fumble by Westlake. On the first play following the drive, Farnes found Barton for a 34-yard pass play to put the ball at the one yard line. Two plays later Brown scored for the 28-0 lead.

Farnes threw his second and final touchdown of the game to Jake Kocherhans with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter to put the game away. The connection went for 12 yards and followed a 25-yard run play from Farnes that pushed the ball into Westlake territory. The touchdown play was the fourth of the drive.

Defensively the Wildcats again were as stellar as they were during region play, picking up its fourth shutout of the season. Though Woods Cross only recorded on sack, they had one fumble recovery and two pass deflections. Junior Vailolo and Siale Mausia each had five tackles in the game. Barton and Alton Brown recorded four tackles each in the win. The Wildcats allowed only 76 yards of total offense to the Thunder, who are eliminated from playoff contention.

The Wildcats will face Timpview, which beat Logan 49-14 the same day, next Friday night at home.
