SALT LAKE CITY — It’s a chance to make both your home and the lives of struggling artists a little more beautiful.
Local artists Annie Henrie and Sandra Rast will be participating in the upcoming “A Gospel Vision of the Arts” exhibit, opening Oct. 26 and 27 at the Deseret Book location at City Creek shopping center in Salt Lake City.
The exhibit, which also features original work by artists such as James C. Christensen and Liz Lemon Swindle, includes small works that will be auctioned off to fund a new scholarship for emerging artists.
“We wanted to help support some of the new artists who aren’t known by anyone yet,” said Dallan Wright, product director of fine arts for Deseret Book. “We also wanted to do a gallery show with some of the artists we’ve already worked with. The two ideas just came together.”
The centerpiece of the exhibit is a collection of 2x4 wood blocks, all covered with canvas and painted by the participating artists. The resulting works are miniature representations of the different artist’s styles, instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with their larger works.
“I love original artwork, but it’s not something everyone can afford,” said Wright. “I didn’t tell the artists what to do. I just said they needed to make it inspirational.”
The results surprised him in the best possible way.
“As they came in, I just got more and more excited,” he said.
The blocks range from a miniature Salt Lake Temple by Rast to a woman with forget-me-nots in her hair by Rose Datoc Dall. The blocks will be part of a silent auction. Proceeds will go toward the Gospel Vision of the Arts Scholarship fund.
“It will be a good way for artists to put themselves out there and show what they can do,” said Wright.
The exhibit will have four artist meet-and-greets that will be open to the public.
Two will be held Oct. 26, with the first running from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and the second running from 6-9 p.m. The last two will be on Oct. 27, with the first running from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and the second running from 4-6 p.m. Henrie and Rast will attend all four events.
The exhibit will run from Oct. 26 to Dec. 10. Visitors can bid on the blocks at any point during that time, and the final winners will be notified after the exhibit closes.
“There’s just such variety,” said Wright. “I think it’ll hit on all levels with people. There’s a little something for everyone.”
