OREM – It wasn’t the greatest showing for the Bountiful Braves and Woods Cross Wildcats volleyball teams at the 4A state tournament at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center Friday.

After the first day of competition was completed, the Braves found themselves out of the bracket completely after losing to Skyline and Springville in consecutive matches. Woods Cross will remain in the tournament, but have no roads to a championship as they’ll play the rest of the tournament from the consolation bracket.

Bountiful lost its opening match by four games and had battled Springville to a 2-2 tie after alternating the first four games in the first consolation match. The Braves fell to the Red Devil 15-11 in the fifth game to drop out of the tournament altogether.

Woods Cross’ initial match ended with a 3-0 win after posting scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-19. In the second round, however, the same fate that befell Bountiful also came to Woods Cross as they dropped a five game match to Timpview to fall to the consolation bracket.

The Wildcats played four very close games, alternating wins with Timpview to get to the deciding fifth game. With the game close throughout, the Wildcats still fell 15-13 in the final game and will start Saturday’s bracket with a match against Bonneville. The best finish the Wildcats can hope for is fifth.

The 4A tournament will continue Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the UCCU Center in Orem.
