BOUNTIFUL – The Bountiful Braves boys’ basketball team is poised to make another strong run into the 4A basketball playoffs.

Despite losing most of the team’s top scorers last season, the deep Bountiful bench from a Braves team that reached the semifinals of the 2012 season will still be on the floor by the start of Bountiful’s first game, scheduled against Northridge on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Among them are seniors Mike Brown, Mike Gubler, Mosese Manu and Avery Najarian; juniors Jordan Bleak, Andrew Lund and Sam Merrill; and sophomores Mitch Halverson, Eric McCleery and Zach Seljaas.

Among the returnees that could hit the floor for Bountiful next week, Merrill and Seljaas were two of the team’s top scorers from 2011.

Merrill will return after averaging 6.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.

Seljaas was the fifth highest scorer on the team, averaging 4.5 points per game along with 2.2 rebounds.

Trevor Lloyd, who played for the basketball team last year, will likely miss the basketball season due to his recovery from an ACL injury suffered playing football.

Making the transition from the football field to the basketball court are Manu and Merrill. Manu saw limited action off the bench last season. Merrill went from receiver and running back to guard last season and put up good numbers as part of the starting lineup.

Entering his junior season, Merrill will likely stay at the guard position, where he was able to succeed under coach Mike Maxwell’s system. Merrill saw plenty of playing time as a sophomore and could be a starter on this year’s squad as well. Manu, now a senior, is likely to battle for one of the forward positions when the Braves start the season.
