BOUNTIFUL С Fans of the Viewmont Lady Vikings girls’ basketball team have reason to be excited about the 2012 version of the Vikings.

Despite the loss of five seniors, Viewmont and head coach Clint Straatman will still be returning several top starters from last year’s team, including leading scorer Caitlyn Larsen.

Among the quartet of seniors on this year’s team will be Taya Adams and Shelby Justice. Juniors will include Tana Singley, Kauri Tye and Katie Toole.

Many of the top players saw some time last year on the varsity squad, limited or otherwise.

Larsen was the statistical leader of the team in many categories for the Vikings in 2011. Now a senior, she led the team last season with an average of 12.3 points per game and was second on the team in rebounds.

She also led the team in steals and assists for the year, nabbing 15 steal and 10 recorded assists.

An all-around shooter from the field, Larsen also led the team in 3-pointers with 25, an average of 1.1 per game.

Adams was the fourth leading scorer for Viewmont last season, averaging 3.4 points per game. She was third on the team in total rebounds.

Tye, the younger sister to Jarom Tye on the boys’ team, averaged nearly three points per game for the Lady Vikings.

Although the Lady Vikings had a roller coaster preseason (4-4 through its first eight games) Viewmont struggled through Region 2 play and finished with only eight wins overall, four in region play.

Viewmont had a chance to reach the playoffs through a play-in game, but lost to Granger 42-37 for the final spot in Region 2.

The Vikings will open the season with a pair of road games against Pleasant Grove and Layton before playing its first home game on Thursday, Nov. 29 against Woods Cross.

Editor’s note: The Nov. 15 print version of this story listed three players who will not be returning to the team.
