LAYTON – Mountains, canyons, foothills and peaks became movements of dance at a special workshop for a number of Davis School District elementary teachers on Nov. 19.
The workshop was held as part of the Annual Elementary Fine Arts Academy sponsored by Art Works for Kids and Beverley Taylor Sorenson, a long-time advocate for art in education.
“This is beneficial to students because there are those who are kinesthetic learners,” said Chara Huckins, a dance artist from Children’s Dance Theater and Tanner Dance in Salt Lake City, teaching the class.
One teacher was shocked when a student who had previously had trouble could name all the geologic features after a class focusing on movement, said Huckins.
Some children learn by listening, others by reading or writing, others might be visual or kinesthetic learners, according to research.
Other workshops at the Davis Conference Center on Monday introduced ideas about adding music, art and drama to the core curriculum at schools.
This year’s focus was on social studies.
“It is so important to reach out and teach in a variety of ways,” said Huckins. “That is how they learn.”
