KAYSVILLE– The Nativity scenes tells the story of Jesus’s birth without saying a word.
The Kaysville Nativity Celebration, coming Nov. 23 from 2-9 p.m. and Nov. 24 from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., shares the many ways that story can be told. This is the 10th anniversary for the free event, which includes music, a quilt show and kids’ crafts in addition to a large display of nativity scenes.
“We’ve got a lot of really great nativities from all over the world,” said event coordinator Nola Child. “Some of them are new this year.”
Child said that local residents donate most of the Nativities that will be on display. Sometimes, the donations add an international flair to the celebration.
“There are a lot of people who love Nativities and collect them all year round when they go around the world,” she said. “We’re lucky enough to be able to share them.”
Other donations honor family tradition.
“Some people have only one or two treasured nativities that have been in their family for generations,” said Child. “It’s amazing how many people are willing to share their treasures with us. We just really appreciate it.”
Nativities also play a big part in the kids’ activities. In addition to a coloring activity, kids will get to play with hands-on nativity sets that allow them to enact the classic Bible story.
“They’re always a favorite,” said Child. “It gives the kids a chance to enjoy themselves, and the parents can keep watch of their children while still enjoying the Nativities.”
If the parents want to, they’re welcome to come play as well.
“It gives parents a chance to enjoy a quiet, reflective time with their children,” she said.
