WOODS CROSS — If you’re shipping packages overseas, you can count your remaining shopping days on one hand.

The U.S. Post Office has announced that any mail or packages sent to military troops in Afghanistan should be mailed by Dec. 3 in order to arrive by Christmas Day.

The Post Office will offer a $2 discount on its largest Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes for friends and family of U.S. military personnel, it announced in a press release.

Other international packages intended to arrive by Christmas should be mailed between Dec. 3 and Dec. 13, depending on the receiving country. You can find a list at usps.com.

Domestic mail should be shipped between Dec. 14, for parcel posts, and Dec. 20, for first-class mail, to arrive by Christmas.

The Post Office recommends confirming addresses, writing return addresses clearly on all packages and never guessing zip codes. It also encourages customers to use strong boxes, leave space for cushioning and not reusing mailing boxes. Futhermore, customers should pack tightly using bubble wrap, rolled newspaper or foam peanuts and using pressure-sensitive tape designed for shipping, the Post Office said.
