WOODS CROSS –  A family will have to postpone moving into its new home after what officials describe as a “moderate fire” damaged the home’s attic and rafters about 7:20 p.m. on Tuesday night.

The home, in the 1500 block of 1100 West in Woods Cross, was being cleaned in preparation for the move scheduled for next week, when an unknown passerby alerted the three people in the home that the roof was on fire, according to South Davis Metro Fire Agency Deputy Chief Jeff Bassett.

“They were in the home cleaning and didn’t see or smell anything,” Bassett said.

The three ran back inside and checked the attic where the fire was located, then ran outside and called 911.

Fire crews were able to knock the fire down fairly quickly, but “those rafters will need some heavy-duty work to repair them,” Bassett said.

The family’s move will likely have to be postponed until after Christmas, Bassett said, but they have a place to live until they can move.

The only utility turned on was the power, Bassett said.

“They were very fortunate the passerby notified them of the fire,” Bassett said.

He had no estimation of the cost for repairs and the cause is also still under investigation. No one was injured.
