NORTH SALT LAKE – A chemical smell at the city’s water plant, 40 E. 1100 North, caused a North Salt Lake city employee to be sent to the hospital and 1100 North to be shut down for about three hours on Monday afternoon.
The employee, who was not identified, was at the water shed, receiving a load of fluoride at about 12:30 p.m., when he smelled a chemical and had difficulty breathing, said South Davis Metro Fire Chief Jm Rampton..
“He initially described the smell as a chemical reaction,” Rampton said, but investigators could find no evidence of any chemical other than the fluoride.
The employee was taken to Lakeview Hospital where he was examined and released, Rampton said.
“I don’t recall there ever having been a problem like this since the county started fluoridating water,” Rampton said. Investigators from the city, the fire agency and the Davis County Health Department were called to the scene.
