FRUIT HEIGHTS — Christmas is usually a joyous time filled with family and friends, but many people instead find it difficult, sad or even painful. Westminster Presbyterian Church, 796 S. Mountain Road, is offering a Longest Night Service on Thursday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. for anyone who may struggle during the holiday season. “It’s a recognition of the fact that sometimes Christmas is hard for someone who has lost a loved one,” said Westminster member Sharon Anderson, who organized the service. The church has been doing the service for four or five years, Anderson said. Similar services have been held in the past at congregations worldwide and here in Davis County. Anderson said they’re generally held on the longest night of the year, or as close to it as possible. The winter solstice is Dec. 21. “We had, as a congregation, several losses that were difficult for everyone” Anderson said. “We recognized that and honored those who had passed.” Anderson hopes the service will be special for those who may be grieving, that they will take away some feeling of comfort. During the service, candles will be lit for those who are hurting and those who have died. There will be special music and scripture to provide comfort. “Grieving can be more poignant in such a setting,” she said. The service will feature prayers, scripture and music that acknowledge God’s presence is there for all, she said. In addition to the death of a loved one, other things can contribute to a feeling of sadness or isolation. A broken relationship, unemployment, poor health and isolation may all contribute to a feeling of being alone in the midst of the celebrations, said a press release from the church.
