FARMINGTON — The Davis County Attorney's Office has determined the use of deadly force by a Sunset police officer was justified in an incident that occurred Oct. 8, 2012.
Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings released a statement Friday that clears Sunset Police Officer Chad Campbell in the shooting, in which a 42-year-old Sunset man was shot in the abdomen.
In his statement, Rawlings said that after meeting with the Protocol Investigation Team, he and his staff determined that Campbell's presence "was lawful and proper," and that the use of deadly force was "proper, justified and consistent with the letter and intent of Utah Code."
Campbell was called to a home near 1100 North and 300 West about 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 8. There, he saw a man through a glass door holding a handgun. At the time, Sunset Police Chief Ken Eborn said the officer ordered the man to put the gun down several times. The man instead allegedly shot his gun into the wall. The officer again ordered the man to drop the gun, but the man allegedly turned the gun on the officer, who shot the man three times. The man underwent surgery for his wounds.
