LAYTONJaden Anderson scored 21 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and paced the Lady Lancers’ defense as Layton picked up its’ sixth win a row Friday night. They beat the Bountiful Lady Braves, 51-34.

“We knew (Bountiful) was kind of a driving team, and that they like to drive and kick and find the open shot,” said Layton coach Van Price. “But we did a really good job of collapsing on the ball, staying in our gaps and making them rely more on their outside shots. They didn’t do as well there, which helped us get the win.”

Of Anderson’s 21-point effort, 11 came in the first half. The Lady Lancers built a 24-14 halftime lead. Bountiful was held to nine points in the first quarter. Jenny Skedros and Tiana Dougher combined to score seven points, but Layton scored 15 points for an early lead that was never relinquished.

Price said Anderson’s efforts paid off. She scored 10 or more points in four of the Lancers’ six games so far.

“She’s been great,” said Price. “Her last game is probably what she remembered as we came into this one. She was around the basket a lot and was 7-for-17, but it wasn’t really what she wanted. Her mind set for tonight was to be better, and she definitely was tonight.”

The Lancers’ defensive efforts remained strong in the second quarter. They held Bountiful to five points. Layton also held Bountiful scoreless for the first five minutes of the quarter, allowing only a 3-pointer by Kennedy Merrick and a late basket by Dougher. Layton closed the first half with three more points for a 10-point halftime lead.

“Our defense is our best asset right now,” said Price. “We’ve only had one team score 60 points on us and we’ve kept the others around 40 points and some others in the 30’s. That’s the thing I’m the most pleased with right now.”

Layton doubled up Bountiful’s scoring efforts by scoring 14 points, including a 7-0 run to start the third quarter. Livia Treseder and Jaden Anderson combined to score five of the seven points in order to extend the lead to 17 points.

Bountiful scored two late baskets to close the third quarter, but still trailed by 17.

Bountiful’s biggest outburst came in the fourth quarter when the team scored 13 points. Merrick scored six of her 14 points in the final frame, but the Braves never got closer the Layton lead before the final buzzer.

“I still think we’re playing great,” said Price. “As always, I think there are some things we need to work on, but that’s what the preseason is for. The record right now doesn’t matter, but we’ll continue to work on things for when we get into region play, which is where (the record) really counts.”

Anderson’s 21-point, 11-rebound scores made for her fourth double-double of the season for the Lancers. Treseder had nine points with three rebounds and Cassidy Anderson scored eight points with four assists and three steals in the win.

For Bountiful, Merrick led the Braves with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals. Eyring scored eight points and had six rebounds, and Dougher scored eight points with five rebounds and two steals in the loss.

The Lancers will face Bonneville on the road Thursday night, and Bountiful will travel to Olympus High School to take on the Titans Friday night.
