NORTH SALT LAKE – For one local author, Christmas dreams have more shoelaces than sugarplums.
Author and North Salt Lake resident Craig Buehner got the story for his latest book, “Shoelaces for Christmas,” in a dream.
“I’d first had the idea when I was driving with my son earlier that day,” said Buehner. “But when I had the dream, I basically deleted what I’d already written and wrote directly from the dream.”
The story focuses on James Millar, a teenage boy whose only focus is getting a car for Christmas. After a tragedy shakes his life, he learns the real meaning of the holiday.
“It’s been amazing hearing what people say and what parts of the book they connect with,” he said.
Buehner admits that the tone of the book is very different from what he usually writes.
His first book, “The Second Door on the Left,” focuses on a woman struggling with mental illness.
His second book, “Windermere,” is about a monster in Alaska.
“I’ve always enjoyed stories,” he said. “For me, they’re a wonderful escape.”
Buehner has been working on an upcoming novel for the last eight months, but “Shoelaces for Christmas,” was finished in just two weeks.
“The book came out of nowhere,” he said. “I felt like it was a gift that needed to be written.”
The novel’s road to becoming published was also unusual. It was sent to the publisher by a friend Buehner had allowed to read the book, then passed up the editorial chain.
The company was already planning on publishing another of Buehner’s books, set to come out early next year. After they read “Shoelaces,” they called and said they wanted it as well.
“They’ve been great to work with,” he said.
