KAYSVILLE – Residents here will soon receive notice of a green waste recycling initiative the city is putting into effect.
The program allows those not interested to opt out by returning a postage-paid card to the city or contacting city staff by phone or in person at the city offices.
The cost of the program is $6.50 per month and includes a weekly pick-up of green waste products such grass clippings and tree branches.
Rocks, dirt or paper cannot be put in green waste recycling cans.
During the winter months of December through March, the green waste cans can be used for regular garbage.
“We anticipate it will be well-received by the city,” Mayor Steve Hiatt told the city council on Tuesday, pointing out that the charge was $1.50 cheaper than the cost of paying for an additional garbage can.
Kaysville will be the sixth and largest city in the Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District to offer green waste recycling.
By removing green waste that is high in water content from garbage cans, there will be fewer problems with the incinerator that produces energy with the waste collected by the district, said Hiatt.
The green waste can also be recycled and used as mulch.
Hiatt and Nathan Rich, executive director of the management district, expect participation to run around 40 to 50 percent of city residents.
Councilman Brett Garlick brought up a concern that some residents would like general recycling cans to be picked up more frequently than the current program of every other week.
After some discussion, councilmembers agreed it would be better for those who fill a can each week to get a second can.
That way all city residents wouldn’t have to pay for weekly service.
General recycling cans cost $3.80 a month.
Those who want to opt-out of the green waste recycling program should notify the city by Feb. 15, 2013. The program is set to be implemented in March.
