BOUNTIFUL – Rumors that a student planned to bring a gun to South Davis Junior High School proved to be just that С rumors.
The rumor started in the days prior to the Christmas break, according to Bountiful Police Lt. Gary Koehn.
“No specific kid was involved,” Koehn said. The school took precautions, including having all students leave by the same door, he said.
About a week-and-a-half prior to those rumors, a student at South Davis Junior High made threats. Koehn didn’t know whether the threats were of a gun or bomb being brought to school, nor did he know the age or gender of the student. He confirmed, however, the student is now in the juvenile justice system.
The incidents were just two of several that police agencies dealt with throughout Davis County in the wake of the shootings in Newton, Conn., on Dec. 14.
At Syracuse High School, five students were suspended and referred to juvenile court for bomb threats made at the school on Dec. 20. Police brought in bomb-sniffing dogs from Hill Air Force Base and extra police patrols were in place on Friday, said Syracuse Police Chief Brian Wallace.
It turned out that one of the students had brought a PlayStation to school and claimed it was a bomb. The other four students were involved in the hoax, school officials said. The students could be charged with class B-misdemeanor disruption of school.
Police also attended a Clearfield High assembly and patrolled other district schools at random on Friday morning.
Schools throughout the state and nation experienced an increase in threats on school campuses following the Connecticut shooting in which a 20-year-old man killed 20 children and six adults. Police agencies and schools have responded with extra patrols and lockdowns, where warranted.
