WOODS CROSS – The generosity of South Davis residents shined through brightly when many individuals, families. businesses and organizations gave of their time and resources to help those in need in this Christmas season.
For instance, the Woods Cross City Angel Tree project met every request for help, said City Treasurer Maureen Nelson.
“We had 38 families that we helped this year. A couple of businesses took two to three families, and one business took maybe 38 angels,” fulfilling the wishes of all those angels that were left on the tree, she said.
The number of those seeking help has stayed fairly constant over the years, Nelson said.
The city has been sponsoring its Angel Tree for many years and gets the word out through its newsletter, utility bill and electronic information board in front of city hall.
“People are so generous,” Nelson said, indicating a couple of bicycles were given along with clothing and toys.
The fortunes have turned for a few of people who previously were recipients, and they were able to “pass it forward” and help others in need, she said.
Meanwhile, at the Bountiful Community Food Pantry, the number of Christmas meal packages distributed this year increased by 29 percent over last year.
At the same time, the number of children in families seeking Sub for Santa help dropped to 349, said Lorna Koci, pantry executive director.
Nearly 500 households were served with either turkey or ham, compared to 387 last year. The Bountiful Communities That Care group and a North Salt Lake City church group of young single adults helped distribute meals.
For the first time, about 400 Christmas breakfast packs of pancake mix, syrup and bacon and sausage were given to clients, she said.
One person left a donation with this poem pertinent to the recent Connecticut shooting:
“How do you fight evil in the world? You fight it with good. This act of kindness is in honor of the 28 lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary. Make the world a better place. Do good and pay it forward. Merry Christmas!”
“The people were so grateful,” Koci said of meal recipients. “There continues to be a need,” she said, thanking the South Davis community for its strong, ongoing support.
