OREMMany of the best high school wrestlers from across the state will gather on Tuesday, Jan. 8 to participate in the 13th annual All-Star Dual.

It will take place at Utah Valley University, in Orem, as an all day event.

The event is unique, said Utah Amateur Wrestling Foundation’s Brian Preece, Each of the participants will represent his team.

For instance, Layton’s Andrew Astle and Viewmont’s Tanner Luke will each represent the 5A class at 120 pounds.

The 5A class is considered one of the teams in the event, along with 4A, 3A, and a combination of 1A and 2A wrestlers.

Also new to this year’s event is the addition of one “headliner” match, bringing this year’s total to three for the one-day event.

None of the three matches will involve local wrestlers.

Headlining representation for the 5A class is Syracuse’s Brock George (113 pounds) and Zane Rich (138 pounds), and Layton’s Andrew Astle (120 pounds); Kenny Astle (145 pounds); and Colton Marshall (160 pounds).

They will represent the 5A team and will wrestle against 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A grapplers.

Alternates on the 5A team are Viewmont’s Taylor Porath (106 pounds) and Viewmont’s Tanner Luke (120 pounds).

Luke finished second in the 5A state tournament last year.

The 4A team will consist of a pair of local wrestlers, including Clearfield’s Logan Swallow (106 pounds) and Bountiful’s Justin Horsley (132 pounds). Swallow will be the primary wrestler in his weight class, and Horsley will serve as an alternate behind Box Elder’s Shand Hardy.

Initial matchups already released by UAWF include Swallow taking on Beaver’s Kyle Evans, George facing off against Canyon View’s Cobe Berrett, Andrew Astle facing Millard’s Nick Sorensen, Rich taking on Maple Mountain’s Landon Knutzen, Ken Astle facing Maple Mountain’s Jesse Carlisle, and Marshall against Kimball Bastian of Maple Mountain.

There will also be six wildcard matches that will not be included in the overall team score.

Local wrestlers won’t be involved.

The one-day event will include more than 28 matches that will count toward each of the team’s overall point standings.

All of the matches will take place on three wrestling mats with the exception of the trio of “featured” matches, which will take place as stand-alone contests.

“The All-Star dual has always had a team component but we felt there was enough individual talent in the weight classes in the classifications in which the wrestlers were pulled to give Utah wrestling fans the best of both worlds,” said Preece, who’s part of the selection committee for the tournament.

“A great team event between the classifications as in the past years, but also have amazing matchups between some of our state’s best wrestlers.”

The Dual will be held at the UCCU Center.
