FARMINGTON – A Layton cataloger and supervisor has been named Davis County’s Employee of the Year.
Malayna Paskett, who is the technical services supervisor/cataloger for the Davis County Library system, based in Farmington, received the honor from the Davis County Commission.
Next year, she will have worked 20 years in the library system that includes seven branches, among them the Central Branch in Layton, North Branch in Clearfield and Syracuse/Northwest Branch.
Paskett and her staff of six-part time people are responsible for processing between 65,000 and 70,000 books and other items per year.
“Malayna is an extraordinary employee,” said Library Director Chris Sanford, who served as North Branch manager for many years.
“Not only does she typify great leadership but she also accomplishes in her own right an extraordinary amount of work,” Sanford said.
That was well demonstrated during the recent move to a new headquarters/Farmington library in October.
Paskett was responsible for organizing the move of about 70,000 books and other items from the old building to the new facility.
“We never stopped processing or ordering books while we were planning the new library,” Sanford said. “There wasn’t a time I or Jerry Myer (assistant library director), didn’t approach her desk with a blueprint related to the building that she didn’t set her work aside, and sometimes we were on very short notice.”
Paskett also assisted with some of the design elements on the new building, including workroom space to better accommodate specific staff tasks, as well as other technical work space.
“The phenomenal thing about that move was that she so carefully measured everything, labeled and figured it out. We never had to back-shift what we moved. That in and of itself was a bonus and saved staff time, the library director said.
Paskett met the book trucks as they arrived from the old building to assure they were directed properly, eliminating the need for more moving, Sanford said.
The move was accomplished in two days rather than three as originally planned. The staff did the move itself, rather than bring in a private moving company.
“She sets the tone, is a resource for others, does her job, gets it done,” Sanford said.
Paskett was selected from nominations submitted by many Davis County departments.
She received a Davis County coin and certificate from the county commissioners.
