BOUNTIFUL — Slushy, snowy and icy roads made for a messy and hazardous commute for Davis County on Thursday morning.
It followed a similar mess from the day before, and at least a little more is expected.
In Davis County alone, the Utah Highway Patrol investigated 24 accidents between midnight and 10 a.m. on Thursday, according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson. Most were fender-benders with no injuries or only minor ones.
However, some crashes were serious.
A tractor-trailer traveling northbound on I-15 near 2400 North in Salt Lake County collided with car. Fuel leaking from the truck’s110-gallon gas tank complicated cleanup and slowed traffic for between two to two-and-a-half hours for motorists entering Davis County, Johnson said.
People driving too fast for existing conditions cause most accidents, Johnson said. He urged motorists to slow down and increase driving distances between automobiles. He also asked motorists to watch for emergency personnel, including law enforcement vehicles, paramedics on fire trucks and ambulance drivers, and Utah Department of Transportation personnel.
"Move over for them when you see them," he said.
More snow is expected along the Wasatch through Friday morning, and meteorologists expect another inch of snow to accumulate in most valley locations, according to the National Weather Service website, wrh.noaa.gov/slc.
Accumulations Wednesday and into Thursday were between 9 and 10 inches in the valley of south Davis County, and 10.1 inches fell in West Bountiful.
Temperatures are expected to rise a little by Friday, possible causing an inversion.
