WOODS CROSS — Statistics published by the Utah Highway Patrol show that between 2002 and 2011, 19 people died in car crashes during the New Year’s holiday.

The number of deaths has been dropping since 1974, according to UHP, but last year there was an increase in crashes related to drunken driving.

This year, the New Car Dealers of Utah and the Good Wheels Association have donated $5,000 to the Utah Highway Patrol to pay for 20 extra trooper shifts overnight. Additional overtime DUI Enforcement shifts are being funded by the Utah Highway Safety Office, according to a press release from the car dealer’s association.
