LAYTON– Chances of winning a five-night vacation to Cancun are a lot better than odds were for the recent super lotto.
That grand prize of a warm-weather vacation will be awarded to a lucky winner who attends the 2013 Utah Travel Expo Jan. 11-Jan. 12 at the Davis Conference Center in Layton.
There will be other trip packages and door prizes awarded during the annual event, which is sponsored by Columbus Travel of Bountiful and co-sponsored by Dick Jensen and Alan McKay.
Tickets are $5 a person and free for those age 17 and below. A $2 off coupon is available at utahtravelexpo.com. Tickets and more information is available by calling Columbus at 801-295-9568.
Hours are Friday, Jan. 11, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
First prize will be a two-night San Francisco vacation, and there will be cruise gift certificates from various cruise lines and vacation groups.
The expo will feature nearly 50 tour, hotel and cruise companies on hand to provide information and facilitate vacation bookings.
All attendees will get a discount of up to $100 plus additional savings and more from tour and cruise companies, information from Columbus said.
Seminars include:
Ґ Africa, 3:30 p.m. Friday, discussed by McKay. He will talk about how to save thousands of dollars on a limited-time airfare sale to one of the world’s great game reserves, Kruger National Park.
Ґ “On Stage Alaska” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. on Friday by Holland America Line. A film presentation will be included and will detail the towering mountains, Ice Age glaciers, abundant wildlife, dog sledding and gaming and more. It will be repeated Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
Ґ China will be explored Saturday at 10:15 a.m. by McKay. A tour is planned for April that will include visits to the Olympic sites of Beijing, hiking the Great Wall, exploring the Forbidden City, helping at an orphanage, shopping and coming face-to-face with the Terracotta Warriors.
Ґ Peru takes center stage at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, featuring McKay. The ancient city of Machu Picchu and sites of the lost Incan empire will be discussed along with the Amazon Jungle and a trip finale via the Panama Canal.
Many other seminars will be offered, ranging from Jamaica to closer to home in Las Vegas.
