WOODS CROSS – When one Bountiful woman heard about the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting just before Christmas, she felt helpless.
The woman was emotional and in need of therapeutic release, she said.
Rather than getting mired in the hopelessness, Jamie Palmer-Ornsby found an outlet in creating an event for the whole community to gather and mourn.
“It should be just a nice kind of healing thing for the community,” she said. “It’s kind of like therapy.”
The event will take place on Monday, Jan. 14 at the Bountiful Park bowery at 400 North and 200 West.
Bountiful Mayor Joe Johnson plans to speak, and local musician Cory Conners will wing. Then, the crowd will launch 26 Chinese lanterns, one for each victim.
Ornsby hopes it will let the survivors of the shooting and their families know that someone is thinking of them, and that it will help people in Utah who may have felt like Ornsby did when she heard the awful news.
During the event, participants can sign a banner that will be sent to Newtown, Conn.
Ornsby isn’t the only local resident to play a part in remembering the Sandy Hook victims.
A man identified on Facebook as Raymond Campbell used a recording of Kurt Bestor’s “Prayer of the Children” to create a video about the tragedy, including quotes from The Book of Mormon and photos of his own children. Other Facebook users have posted it to their own profiles or shared it with friends almost 5,000 times.
