When my children were young, we looked forward to the Clipper being delivered. Often, our children or their friends would be pictured or featured in an article.

There were good news articles, and we could keep up with things happening in Bountiful. It is a good paper. I now pick up copies at the senior center in Bountiful and appreciate the service.

This is my first letter to you. I am a moderate in the field of politics. No froth on my mouth until I opened your Jan. 3 edition, which had a political cartoon that was so tasteless, I had to write.

Your drawing of our president was unbelievably ugly. It showed so much anger, and so much hatred, and so much ugliness. But most of all, that carton showed enormous disrespect for the office of the president.

At first, I thought it was a racial statement, something I would expect from the very deep South. I don’t know where you got it. I hope no one on your staff would come up with such a depiction.

I fully understand the purposed of political cartoons. There are many that poke fun at President Obama. Many of them are not flattering. These statements are part of our culture. I get all that. But the sheer nastiness and meanness of your cartoon was over the top.

And surely I don’t understand your caption, “Cliff Diver of the Year.” Were you implying that he was the reason we were so near going over? If you were, you surely don’t have all the facts. We have been sliding for probably 15 years or more. There are players of both parties that share the blame. Perhaps a busload of politicians as “Divers of the Year” would be closer to the truth. And yes, I think the Tea Partiers have really hurt the process.
