A Panama Canal cruise is on almost everyone’s bucket list. However, the country has so much more to offer than just the Canal.  From bustling Panama City to small indigenous Indian villages or from the history of the Panama Canal to the amazing beauty and wildlife of the rain forest, Panama is a travel destination that should be on your bucket list.

Panama has many things to see and do.  A must see on your list should be the Panama Canal.  It is a wonder of the world and it’s amazing to see how the canal works and operates.  Just 30 minutes outside of Panama City is the Canal Museum.  Here you can see the history of the Canal from when the French started it to when it was finished by the United States. The highlight of this museum is the canal observation deck. Here you can watch ships pass through the Mira Flores Locks on the Pacific side of the Canal. You can get the full Panama Canal experience by taking a small boat through the lock system and a short cruise on Gatun Lake. Gatun Lake is the man-made lake between the Pacific and Atlantic locks that feed the needed water to both sides of the Canal.

One of the highlights of Panama might be a stay at the Gamboa Rain Forest Resort. This resort is located in the heart of the rain forest on the shores of Gatun Lake.  From here you have several options for amazing Panama experiences. The highlight is a speed boat tour of Gatun Lake called Monkey Island Adventure. See the wild life including monkeys. From this area you can take a tram tour through the different layers of the rain forest canopy, ending at a platform where you get an amazing view of Panama and the Panama Canal.

One of the most fascinating things you can do in Panama is an excursion to one of the Indian villages, usually beginning by taking a dugout canoe to the village. These villages have not changed or adapted to many of the modern comforts we are used to. You’ll enjoy a traditional meal and see how the Indians live.

Panama is a country full of culture, history and beautiful scenery. Panama is a destination worth considering for your next vacation.
