CLEARFIELD – The closure of the Hostess bakeries has meant fewer bread choices for patrons of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program.
The only bread listed in the authorized foods booklet is the Sara Lee brand, according to a press release from the Utah Department of Health. Within the Sara Lee brand, two varieties are allowed; the Classic 100 percent Whole Wheat and Soft and Smooth 100 percent Whole Wheat, both in 16-ounce loaves.
Recently, the Smith’s 16-ounce 100 percent Whole Wheat Round Top Bread has been added to those approved for WIC clients, the press release said.
UDOH expects that in the coming weeks, Dunford Bakers will provide two new WIC-authorized varieties. A few grocery stores with in-store bakeries are already producing WIC-approved whole wheat bread.
