CLINTON – Coals and ashes placed in a garbage can are being blamed for a fire at a home here Wednesday morning that caused about $200,000 damage.
Clinton City fire crews were dispatched to the home at 2841 W. 1010 North at 12:50 a.m. on Wednesday after a neighbor called in the alarm, said Clinton Deputy Fire Chief Justin Benavides. The family was able to escape the home and firefighters rescued the family’s two dogs. It took crews about 40 minutes to knock the flames down. Crews remained until about 3 a.m. cleaning up.
When crews arrived, flames were coming from a pickup truck and a toy hauler trailer. Benavides said the homeowner had ammunition and a propane tank stored in the trailer. The heat from the fire caused the ammunition to explode around emergency crews, but no one was hurt.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Benavides said the homeowner had placed coals and ashes from the fireplace in a bucket the day before After 24 hours, he dumped the ashes into the garbage can, but there were still hot spots in the ashes, which likely caused the fire, Benavides said.
