BOUNTIFUL — Duncan Lighting, which has had its home on Main Street for decades, is closing its storefront business as soon as its inventory there sells out.
However, the specialty lighting dealer won’t be going out of business for good. Instead, the Duncan family is moving all its sales online to mylightingsource.com.
“In a nutshell, the storefront just wasn’t doing enough business,” said store manager Ken Duncan, whose father owns the business. “It wasn’t profitable enough and the e-commerce does rally well in the new kind of business that is out there.”
It’s difficult to compete with big box stores and other websites, Duncan said. He added that many people assume that shopping in those locations will be less expensive, but that is often untrue. Selection is also an issue. His shop carries hundreds of brands, but other stores have five or six at most, Duncan said.
The storefront is likely to close in about six weeks.
“We’ve kind of been forced into this position,” Duncan said. “We wish we weren’t, but it is what it is.”
