BOUNTIFUL — Temperatures are going to warm up over the weekend, but freezing rain is expected to continue through the evening Thursday, according to the national weather service offices in Salt Lake City.

The freezing rain is caused by a temperature inversion that has trapped a thin layer of cold air between the ground and warm air above. Rain is falling from that warm air, but it is freezing as soon as it hits the ground.

The evidence is everywhere, from parking lots coated with ice and slush to the windows of cars and slippery sidewalks.

By Thursday at 1:30 p.m., .15 inches of rain, but no snow, had fallen in Centerville. Hill AFB received .13 inches and the Bountiful bench .09, but lower Bountiful got only .03 inches and Layton saw just .01.

The haze and fog that have covered the northern Wasatch for days also remain, and the level of small-particle soot has risen as the humidity has increased, according to the Utah Division of Air Quality.

Air starts to be unhealthy when the rating of this soot, known as particulate matter 2.5, exceeds 55 millionths of a gram per cubic meter of air. Thursday afternoon, the level was 61.3.

Unhealthy air is expected through Sunday, according to the division, but the weather service reports that the haze should break up over the weekend and be gone by Monday.

By Sunday and Monday, another storm system is expected to hit.

Meanwhile, the South Davis Recreation Center cancelled its kids Zumba class and a racquetball tournament Thursday evening because of unsafe driving conditions. The Bountiful Creative Arts Academy also cancelled its dance classes.
