BOUNTIFUL – Despite a key missing piece on the floor Friday night against Woods Cross, the Bountiful Lady Braves girls’ basketball team didn’t miss a beat.
With Kennedy Merrick injured and on the sidelines, Tiana Dougher scored 13 points and Jenny Skedros scored 10 points. The Lady Braves shut down the Wildcats 59-42 to pick up their third win in the last four games. “Offensively we really got things back together,” said Bountiful coach Joel Burton. “You can never complain about a defense like that. Our goal is to generally keep teams under 10 points per quarter and we did that very well in the second quarter, especially.”
After building a 15-7 lead after the first quarter, Bountiful’s defense held Woods Cross scoreless for nearly the entire second quarter, building a lead that expanded from eight to 25 points by halftime. While the Braves were holding Woods Cross scoreless, the entire squad took part in what eventually became a 13-0 run through the first six minutes of the second quarter.
During the scoring streak, Dougher, Skedros, Liz Larsen, Christina Plank, Josie Walton, Jordyn Turville, and Ashley Eyring each scored at least one point.
Woods Cross’ only points were scored with 25 seconds remaining in the first half, a two-point bucket by Gaby Ocejo, before the half ended.
“With Merrick’s injury, we had to rely on some young players that we put on the floor tonight,” said Burton. “In a case like tonight, with an injury to a key player, they were each able to get on the floor and step up for that missing piece. That was good to see.”
Woods Cross’ offense started scoring more to start the second half as Eden Jacobsen and Aubree Riddle combined to score nine of Woods Cross’ 15 third-quarter points, but still trailed by 22 points entering the final quarter.
“They really do keep their composure pretty well,” said Burton. “We were pretty close to losing a big lead in the quarter, but they really stepped it up and finished well in the fourth quarter.”
Woods Cross began the quarter on a 7-2 run after Riddle, Halle Smith and Camille Horrocks each scored buckets to close the scoring gap. Despite the Lady Braves being outscored 18-13, Bountiful’s first half defensive efforts proved to be the difference in the game. “Without a doubt the first half made the difference,” said Burton. “We obviously didn’t do as well in the second half with the defense, but it’s something we’ll look to improve on.” GAME
GAME NOTES: Dougher finished with 13 points, two rebounds and one steal, and Skedros finished with 10 points and seven assists in the win. For Woods Cross, Riddle scored 11 points and Jacobsen scored 10 points in the loss. The Lady Braves have won three of their last four games, and Woods Cross has lost six of its last seven.
