LAYTON — Police captured a suspect in an attempted home burglary near Valley View Golf Course in Layton, after the homeowner fired shots.

Alleged burglar Robert Santos Cruz, 47, was taken into custody near the home following the incident.

The homeowner called police just before 4 p.m. He had returned home and saw a car with two occupants parked in his driveway, according to Layton Police press release. The homeowner then noticed a man standing in the doorway, holding what appeared to be pry-bar, according to Layton Police Lt. Shawn Horton.

The homeowner retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and confronted the suspect. Police say the homeowner fired two shots before they arrived. However, it was not clear if the homeowner fired at the suspect. Meanwhile, the suspect vehicle left during that confrontation, Horton said.

Cruz allegedly ran from the home as police arrived. Police apprehended him a short time later.

Both the suspect and homeowner are being questioned, Horton said. There were no injuries reported.

Police issued an attempt to locate on the vehicle, which is described as a green, passenger sedan. The driver is described as an adult female and the passenger as an "older" male.

The homeowner's name was not released.
