CENTERVILLE — A 26-year-old man was arrested last week after he made a habit of returning to Target and Walmart where he allegedly stole items.

Trevor Steven Newman was booked into the Davis County Jail after police picked him up at Walmart on Feb. 8. He allegedly had a stolen credit card, paraphrenalia containing heroin, and items stolen from the stores in his car, according to Centerville Assistant Police Chief Paul Child.

Police were first called to Target on Jan. 24 when store security personnel allegedly saw Newman removing DVD sets, putting the cases in another area and walking out of the store with the DVDs inside his coat. When Newman was confronted by security personnel, he asked if he could return the merchandise. 

“The asset protection officer told him ‘no,’ he’d have to go back inside,” Child said. “At that point he threw (the DVDs) at the foot of the asset protection officer, and fled to a blue Durango and took off,” Child said.

After reviewing surveillance videos, Child said officers identified him as the suspect in a similar theft at Target the day before.

Police ran into Newman again during a house call in Centerville, where he was recognized but not arrested.

On Friday, Feb. 8, officers were again called to Target on a report of an unlawful use of a credit card, when store security personnel allegedly recognized Newman, Child said.

Newman was taken into custody at Walmart, where police allegedly found the stolen merchandise, the wallet and the drug paraphernalia in his vehicle.

He was booked on six counts of unlawful use or possession of a credit card, one count of theft, one count of possession of someone’s official documents and one count of heroin possession. The Davis County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case before filing formal charges.
